REST IN PERPETUITY

EST 1598 THIS UNCONSECRATED BURIAL GROUND IS HOME TO THE OUTCASTS OF SOCIETY; PAUPERS, SEX-WORKERS, AND THEIR CHILDREN, WHO WERE SHUNNED BY THE CHURCH AND DENIED A HOLY BURIAL.

An emblematic monument to London’s dark history, the Crossbones Graveyard is the final resting place of 15,000+ lost souls buried between 1598 - 1883. We have been campaigning to save this sacred space in the shadow of the Shard, London SE1, for over three decades.

The Crossbones Graveyard is now a quarter of its original size of 60,000 buried souls due to TFL, who currently own the land, exhuming remains to build a substation for the Jubilee Line in the 1990’s.

Zanna has since pioneered campaigns with the constant involvement of fellow activists, artists, and outcasts from our community.

Today, thanks to the ongoing efforts of ‘This is Still the Crossbones Graveyard’ campaigns and monthly vigils, the graveyard is still very much alive.

In May 2024, Millwall’s Den secured a 999-year lease of their homeground to continue the legacy of football for the community.

Despite a history marked by controversy and rejection, the club has fought tenaciously to secure its future.

If these outcasts can rise from the rubble, can we not do the same for those buried at Crossbones Graveyard? Let us protect these sacred remains in perpetuity and honour the lives of the lost souls who rest here.

When part of the graveyard was desecrated by TFL, no one was watching: this time there is an audience.

REMEMBERED. NOT REDEVELOPED.
